Condemnation Erupts as Trump's Post on Rob Reiner Spurs Sharp Backlash

Figures from both sides of the partisan divide and the entertainment world are coming together to censure Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the shocking deaths of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Provocative Online Statement

Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Brentwood home, Trump posted on his platform to describe the deceased director as "tortured and suffering". The post, he claimed Reiner's demise was "due to the anger he caused others through his massive, relentless, and incurable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

The post quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".

Police Update and Arrest

Police have since announced the arrest of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in connection with the incident. It is reported his bail was established at a substantial amount.

A Torrent of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians

The reaction to Trump's post was immediate and scathing.

This is a appalling and vile statement,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also criticized the statements. She pointed to previous rhetoric from Trump regarding political violence, demanding, "Do you have no shame? Can you get any lower?"

The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "This is a sick man."

Mirroring this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a contemptible piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just crossed a line. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own murder because they didn’t support him. So sick."

Rebuke from His Own Political Ranks

A number of Republican lawmakers also expressed dismay.

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". She also mentioned challenges with addiction and psychological well-being within families.

Another GOP representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disrespectful" given the circumstances. He publicly dared others in his political party to defend the statements.

The Director's Legacy and Stance on Trump

Rob Reiner was consistently a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. In a previous conversation, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump be reelected to power.

"There is authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "If we crumble, there’s a danger that democracy collapse around the world."

Despite his strong opposition, Reiner had in the past shown "complete revulsion" and condemned violence for political ends unequivocally following the shooting of a different political figure.

A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal

Adding a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously recounted the anecdote of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "special hairspray" while posing on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
