Jurgen Klopp says rejoining to coach Liverpool is conceivable.
The German coach, who departed from Anfield in 2024, indicated that returning someday is an option. Klopp, after a transformative nine-year spell which brought Champions League success and the Reds’ first league title for three decades, now holds positions in a global football capacity with the Red Bull group and in an advisory capacity with the German Football League.
Fan Sentiment and His Frank Comments
Liverpool won England's top flight in the previous campaign, yet numerous supporters who revere Klopp would be thrilled by the possibility that he may eventually return. Speaking candidly, he shared with the podcast host: “I said I will never coach another team on English soil. So that means in case it's my former club...absolutely. Theoretically it’s possible.”
“I’m 58, so the choice could be mine down the line, who knows. Is a decision required immediately? In that case, I'd stay away. Luckily, it's not necessary. I'll simply watch how things unfold.”
Conditions for a Comeback
When asked about what circumstances would need to occur to draw him back to the dugout, Klopp admitted he isn't eager to such a return. “I'm not entirely sure, I enjoy my current role,” he commented. “I don’t miss coaching; I don’t miss standing under bad weather through long matches; I don’t miss going to media briefings multiple times weekly or constant media duties weekly.
“I don’t miss the dressing room per se, however, dining out with the players talking freely, that’s nice. Success was frequent so there was often a very good mood around the place. I still have the captain's chuckle vividly recalled to illustrate.”
Praise for His Successor
Klopp was full of praise regarding Arne Slot, praising him for the adjustments which secured the championship in the previous season. They've been defeated four in a row in every contest following significant transfers, though he denied the suggestion that it might signal the start of a downward turn.
“[Liverpool have] a top-class attacker like Florian Wirtz, critics will regret with negative comments. An outstanding player. [Hugo] Ekitike, incredible player. They have a strong well-judged squad. No need for concern about Liverpool, they'll bounce back.”
Emotional Tribute for the Late Forward
He shared movingly regarding the passing of the Portuguese star, whom he brought in while in charge, along with the consequences at the club. The Portugal international died tragically in a vehicle collision alongside his brother in July.
“How do you replace somebody like Diogo? It goes beyond his footballing ability, it's his character. I struggle to conceive the squad without him in it. I find it difficult to discuss about it. A profound tragedy for the entire squad too. No one within the club would cite it for poor performances yet it's the reality. Being in that space where he was omnipresent. Handling this on a personal level is difficult. Unbearable.”
