LBJ's Historic Scoring Run Ends, However Lakers Pull Off Win Against Raptors.
The Lakers star knew his monumental run of scoring in double figures was in danger. When it mattered most, however, he wasn't bothered.
The right decision was to pass the rock – and he executed. With that selfless act, the unprecedented record came to an end.
James's staggering streak of over 1,200 straight regular-season double-digit scoring performances concluded this past Thursday, as basketball's greatest scorer had only eight points during the Lakers' 123-120 win against Toronto. He delivered the game-winning assist, finding teammate Rui Hachimura to knock down a triple at the buzzer.
“Zero,” James stated in response on the record concluding. “We won.”
A Selfless Decision Seals the Game
LeBron had the chance to attempted to win the contest – and extended the streak – on the final possession, yet he opted to pass to Hachimura in the left corner. Hachimura made the shot, and James celebrated triumphantly.
You have to play basketball correctly. You always make the right play,” James explained. “That’s just been my M.O.. That’s how I was taught to play. That's what I've done my whole career.”
James is very conscious of his point total he has during a game,” commented the team's head coach the coach. He acted as he has done so many times.”
The Streak's End Game
LeBron checked back into the game for the final time with just over five minutes left, the result and the streak both hanging in the balance. His tally was only six points on 3 for 15 from the field at that juncture.
He managed a basket at 1:46 left to level the contest then missed a 14-footer with 1:01 left that would have pushed him to ten points.
He avoided taking one more attempt – though the opportunity was there. Austin Reaves gave James the ball with a few seconds left, however, James decided to make the extra pass instead.
“The basketball gods, if you do it the proper way, they often repay you,” the coach concluded.
The History of a Staggering Run
This incredible run began back in January 2007. It was, by far the longest streak of its kind the league has ever seen: His Airness, Michael Jordan had 866 consecutive games with 10+ points, Kareem recorded 787, and Karl Malone had the fourth-longest run at 575.
He is such a team-oriented player,” remarked Lakers center a fellow Laker.
He simply plays hoops. The chance was there but due to the player he is and his character off the court, he chose the team play, dished to Hachimura and we won the game.”
Scoring in double figures had long been an afterthought early in the start of fourth quarters. During James’s streak, he had attained double figures entering the fourth on the vast majority of occasions before this game.
Yet two of those rare single-digit games after three periods had occurred recently: He recorded nine points entering the final quarter versus the Mavericks last week, followed by six going into the fourth versus the Suns on Monday night.
James managed to keep the streak alive against the Suns. The very next outing, it concluded – and he celebrated all the same.
“I always just make the best play. That is instinctive, regardless of outcome,” James affirmed. “You make the right play, the sports deities are always returning the favor.”
