Move Over, Murdoch: Could Lord Rothermere Poised to Be the UK's Leading Media Mogul?
Biding twenty years for another chance to secure a prized business purchase is a privilege not afforded to most business leaders. The Rothermere family, though, adopts a more patient stance to time.
While most business boards create five-year plans, the Rothermeres, having compiled a feared media empire over over one hundred years, are used to thinking in terms of generations.
A Long-Awaited Opportunity
This was in the summer of 2004 that Jonathan Harold Esmond Vere Harmsworth, the distinguished proprietor of the Daily Mail, failed in his bid to acquire the Telegraph titles.
By Rothermere’s assessment, the setback delighted the media magnate because it would have established a stable of rightwing newspapers influential enough to rival the “distinct political influence” of his publications.
The reserved Rothermere, however, was able to play a longer game. The publications were once again offered for sale in 2023. From that point, two potential buyers have entered and exited, both after staff rebellions over their appropriateness. Rothermere has now swooped.
Family Legacy
As a result, the 57-year-old has reinforced his dynastic passion with British newspapers, after his forebears bought, sold and smashed together some of the biggest titles of their era.
“Lord Rothermere has got a business head, but he’s not sharply business minded,” said Alex DeGroote. “This sounds a bit cheesy, but he’s genuinely passionate about journalism. I suspect internally, they’ve wanted to unite media businesses that serve centre-right audiences for decades.”
Huge issues persist before the hereditary peer’s DMGT group can clinch the titles. Alongside competition and media plurality concerns, staff members are asking how he will stump up the £500m valuation. Nevertheless, his aspirations of establishing a conservative media powerhouse have been rekindled.
Out of the Limelight
This constituted a bold bid for a owner who prides himself on staying behind the scenes, often noting his willingness to let the combative opinions of the Daily Mail differ from his own gentler, more pro-European conservatism.
In this family, however, media acquisitions are a dynastic tradition. An image of Alfred Harmsworth, his great-great-uncle who established the Daily Mail in 1896, dominates Rothermere’s office. A childhood recollection was of his father, Vere, bringing him to the printing facilities.
Journalistic Roots
A young Jonathan would be included in conversations about the difficult start for the Mail on Sunday in 1982. He recalls the pressure of the intense competition in 1987 between the London Daily News and his family’s London paper, which he later sold.
He personally dabbled in journalism, serving as a editorial staffer on the Sunday Mail in Scotland, before concentrating on the business side of his family’s group. When his father died in 1998, Rothermere is said to have had about 20 minutes upon arriving back from the hospital before company calls began, effectively starting his leadership of DMGT, at thirty years old.
Strategic Focus
In the past, he divested profitable parts of the business to concentrate on the Mail and additional press holdings. The Telegraph bid is the latest sign of his eagerness to consolidate the dynastic press dominance. “This is a 20-year plus target acquisition,” said a ex-staffer. “He doesn’t want the Mail as the only newspaper asset he leaves for his son Vere.”
Rothermere’s decision to delist the company in 2021 has also facilitated the acquisition attempt. “I don’t have to justify myself to anybody,” he remarked shortly after the decision.
Press Freedom
Intervening to change the Telegraph’s politics would be uncharacteristic. A former editor told that both he and his predecessor interfered editorially.
“That is the main reason why I turned down very enticing offers to edit the Times and the Telegraph,” he said. “Frankly, I simply didn’t believe that other proprietors would give me that freedom. It’s difficult to overstate how valuable that freedom is to an editor.”
He continued, “Fleet Street is littered with the corpses of sacked editors who, amid crashing circulations, tried to please their proprietors rather than their readers. The Rothermeres have always understood that. It’s a sacred principle for them that editors are given total editorial autonomy, with the brutally clear understanding that they are dismissed if they produce poor papers.”
Regulatory Scrutiny
With British politics appearing to shift to the right, there are inevitable political concerns about uniting the Mail and Telegraph at a juncture when each have been increasing coverage of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party.
Several progressive figures believe the Mail’s abrasive style has become more pronounced in recent years, pointing to its championing of talking points advocated by Farage on migration and the “woke” agenda. Others argue the Telegraph has experienced an even more radical shift, often running radical-right opinion pieces that go beyond those of the Mail.
Funding Uncertainties
Many queries remain about how someone even with Rothermere’s resources has the cash. Most media analysts believe that a more representative price tag for the titles is in the range of £350m, but Rothermere is prepared to pay a premium.
DMGT does not have a ready £500m, the price apparently insisted upon by the existing owners as they seek to recoup the loan that secured ownership of the assets previously.
Future Prospects
Rothermere has promised to maintain the Telegraph and Mail titles editorially separate, regarding them as catering to different audiences – broadsheet and mid-market. However, there are concerns within both publications over cuts and the future strategy, considering the state of the press sector.
Again, the family has demonstrated a willingness to take radical steps when required. In the past was attempting to save an ailing Daily Mail in 1971, he merged it with the Daily Sketch, brutally sacking numerous staff in the process.
Approval Process
A government minister has asked that DMGT and the current owners present the intended acquisition to the government within 21 days, but the outstanding issues will ensure the process rumbles on well into the coming year.
“A company that owns the Mail and the Telegraph would have the scale to give both papers a better chance of surviving,” noted a former editor. “But, even then, such a company would be a pygmy compared to the giant internet platforms and the BBC from whom most people today get their news.”
His eldest son, thirty-one, Rothermere’s eldest son, is already being groomed to assume leadership of the dynastic holdings, holding a key position in DMGT’s media business. If his duties will include control of the Telegraph is the subsequent phase in the family's press narrative.
