He fought the legal system and the law prevailed.

Two months subsequent to receiving a 27-year sentence for attempting to “eradicate” the nation's democracy, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro finally seems destined for incarceration.

Anticipated Jailing

The found-guilty coup-monger – who's been subject to home confinement in his mansion while a number of judicial steps and challenges play out – is widely expected to be incarcerated in the next few days, amid mounting speculation that he will be moved to a notorious high-security penitentiary.

Previous Remarks on Inmates

Over Bolsonaro’s 40-year time in politics, the conservative former military man showed scant compassion for the country's inmates.

“For what reason must we offer these scoundrels a good life?” he previously wondered. “They should just get fucked, end of story. That's my view.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Unless you desire to end up in prison, you simply need is not rape, abduction or rob.”

Jail Location Speculation

Yet the possibility of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has horrified allies, a group of four this week toured the complex in an seeming attempt to dissuade the high court from sending him there.

The senator, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s political party who was one of the visitors, claimed he expected the 70-year-old politician to be incarcerated in the next 10 days and feared his assigned prison could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s serious gut ailments – the result of a almost deadly knife attack during the last political campaign – meant it would be risky to keep the former president there. “His condition is highly critical. He cannot to handle it if they take him to Papuda … It will be terrible,” said the senator, who also expressed concern about cramped cells and the condition of prison meals.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas remembered witnessing cells containing four dozen detainees: “That’s virtually one meter squared per prisoner.

“We spoke to the inmates and they complain, naturally, of the awful meals,” added the senator.

Allies Speak Out

Lucas is not the sole person expressing views ahead of the one-time head of state's expected detention.

Authoring in a leading publication, another ally, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “severe” finale to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” political career and alleged Brazil was about to see “the largest unfairness in its past”.

“It is an wrong that eats away the souls of millions Brazilian citizens,” he stated.

Mixed Popular Opinion

This could be true considering the significant following Bolsonaro retains on the right-wing. However his expected incarceration has also warmed the spirits of numerous others who think he deserves to be incarcerated for plotting to prevent the elected leader from taking power – and also plotting to have him killed.

Congressman Otoni, a representative for the sitting president's allied group, stated: “Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in a dark cell. Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be sent in isolation. No one desires Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to lie on concrete. We desire him to obtain respectful care – but respectful care in prison. He must not continue being his personal jailer for his entire life.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro backers, who have spent years applauding the severe handling of inmates, had abruptly woken up to their rights. “Recently has the far-right – which has always argued that human rights are not for offenders – opted to inspect a jail to discover what circumstances are actually like,” he said.

“He is a lawbreaker,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he deserved “shameful, demeaning treatment”.

Likely Prison Facilities

Despite speculation that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which presently houses about fourteen thousand detainees, his more likely destination looks to be a close penitentiary for officers and other “unique” prisoners known as Papudinha (Little Papuda).

His potential cell are much more adequate than those in the main prison, although nevertheless a distant from the luxury Bolsonaro experienced while residing in the spectacular presidential palace, about 12 miles away.

As per reports, the cell Bolsonaro could expect to inhabit in Papudinha has about 24 sq metres – roughly the dimensions of vehicle spaces – and features a 130 square foot restroom with a shower and a 12 sq metre terrace. “He could be authorized to have a television and even a cooler in his room as long as they were provided by his relatives,” the report stated.
