Scream OG Star Matthew Lillard Is Anxious He Could Spoil the Series with the Seventh Installment.
The highly anticipated slasher sequel Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is preparing for a major family reunion. This latest installment signals the legendary return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters making a comeback.
"Returning to a role you played in your mid-20s when you're in your fifties was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," Lillard admits.
An Unexpected Comeback for Fallon Characters
Reports have confirmed that a trio of different characters from earlier films are set to return in this new outing, even though meeting their demise in previous installments. The precise method of their resurrection remains a mystery. Fans should prepare for the return of the endearing and nearly unkillable cop Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and Scream 3 killer Roman Bridger, and a member of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Iconic Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the series for the first time since a brief appearance is a dream come true, though he is apprehensive about the audience response. The actor vividly recalls the precise instant he received the news from the series creator.
"I remember the conversation. I remember the small talk. I recall him posing the question. That moment is permanently etched on my mind," he states. "Therefore I'm really proud to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the decades since the original film was released, which left Lillard feeling quite nervous.
"The reality is, that's a role that lives in infamy, for better or worse," he notes. "A part that is now embodied in every single Ghostface mask that appears every October 31st."
The Anxiety of Letting Down the Fandom
Now that filming has concluded, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the finished film. He confesses to feeling immense pressure about hoping not to be the one who damages the popular franchise.
"It's either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard observes. "At the start, I don't know if the movie's be successful. I am unsure if people want to see me. I've certainly seen plenty of people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this trope?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the series. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Speculation and Excitement Abound
While countless dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others return persists. Perhaps they live rent-free in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a previous plot device. Alternatively, perhaps they are in some way still living in a strange shared situation. The chance of a meta-horror story, inspired by earlier horror movies, also exists.
Moviegoers will find out the truth when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
