The Details Known Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 lives perished and more than 40 were wounded when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have called a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have announced the death toll is 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were taken to the hospital.

The deceased are yet to be formally identified, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She told the events leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
