The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Alleges Parent Company Halted Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Product
The original creators of the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has claimed that parent company Unilever blocked the introduction for an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that established the business with Jerry Greenfield, revealed how he plans to independently develop the controversial flavor as part of an individual collection highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Dispute Involving Founders and Corporate Owner
This latest development deepens the continuing conflict among the internationally recognized dessert company and its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods corporation which acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
The co-founders have claimed that Unilever and their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company from "maintaining its activist principles".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming an Emblem for Support
The entrepreneur stated through an Instagram video that he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas regarding the product's name and additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder commented from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”
This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol of support for the Palestinian people because of its colors, that closely resemble those of Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Previous Social Engagement and Current Changes
Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever transferring the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming product line will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand that was first created several years back to support former US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Management Changes and Future Intentions
The founder stated how he will develop additional frozen dessert varieties that address concerns which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
The announcement comes after partner Mr. Greenfield resigned from the company recently, following decades with the organization, citing worries regarding how its independence was undermined after Unilever's decision to restrict its social activism.
Previously, Ben Cohen commented that "Jerry has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
"My heart leads me to keep working within the organization to fight for corporate autonomy ensuring that it can fulfill the social mission, the values that it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he told media outlets.
