NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that sparked debate in his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.

But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key issue, did not confirm he would live there right away following his triumph in November.

"This decision came down to the security of my family and the need to directing all of my focus on carrying out the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for," stated Mamdani in his announcement.

A Fond Farewell

His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area famous for its vibrant immigrant communities and culinary diversity.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he noted.

"Although my address will change there, it will always live within me and my efforts as mayor," he added.

Campaign Controversy

In his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his central policy – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his opponents, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the apartment even though he is from a famous family.

A House Not Always Used

Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his private home on the Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a venue for public city functions, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will experience a setting very different than his modest Astoria apartment.

Featuring pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.

Inside, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated consistent with the home's historical period.

The estate, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

His former home is under rent control, which means the city regulates on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.

New Yorkers see such units as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses rises faster than the average income.

Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the property website Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
