The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed an exciting opening credits. It features the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while teasing at several heart-wrenching personal histories for characters including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
Overall, the opening appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition composed by artist the talented musician. It's a track from the official score of that title, the second release released by the production company's music division their music brand. It's a great sentimental option, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when cast member the performer added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The show's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has already said that the animated show will have some surprises and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening appears as one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to get to know the characters of the second series, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
