The Three Lions to Launch UEFA Euro 2028 Journey at the Etihad Stadium
The English squad will initiate their 2028 European Championship campaign at the Etihad Stadium, on the condition that they attain the expected qualification for a competition hosted across most of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.
The Etihad Stadium has not welcomed an English men’s match since May 2016, when Turkey were beaten 2-1 in a friendly, but is expected to welcome the Three Lions for their inaugural game on Saturday 10 June 2028.
The team are planned to play their concluding group fixtures at the national stadium, but, in the event of winning the preliminary round, their knockout stage opener would be held at St James’ Park. Placing second would mean starting the playoffs at Everton’s ground.
Competition Opening and Demonstration
The championship was unveiled at an ceremony in a London landmark on the previous evening. High-ranking officials from the tournament organizers and the host football associations were confronted as they arrived the site by approximately 50 protesters, who urged Israel’s national side to be expelled from international football because of the Gaza crisis.
Placards were held up with slogans reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists shouted: “Kick Israel out.”
Championship Timeline
The opening game of Euro 2028 will be staged at the the national stadium of Wales in Cardiff, on June 9, 2028, a match that will involve the Dragons if they secure a place.
Wembley Stadium will host both semi-finals and the final, which will be staged on July 9, 2028 with a kick-off time at 5:00 PM.
It is hoped that an earlier start, which will also be implemented for Champions League finals from next season, will cater to families and help engage a more diverse set of audiences.
Participating Countries
The Republic of Ireland are set to play their opening match at the Aviva Stadium and Scotland would follow suit at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.
The national sides of all four hosts will take part in the preliminary stage; two reserved places will be reserved for any that do not reach Euro 2028 through the qualification path.
Stadiums and Playoffs
Aston Villa’s stadium and Spurs’ ground finalize the nine host stadiums. Every stadium will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarter-finals held at each country’s national stadium.
The qualification draw will be held in the Northern Irish capital, which was excluded as a venue city last year when it emerged Casement Park could not be redeveloped in time, on December 6, 2026.
