In a inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” America's largest city, declaring “a new era” and an bold beginning to his term.

An Unprecedented Leader

The young political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.

Defying advice to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my convictions for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a agenda featuring:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Dynamics

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as surprisingly productive.

The Fundamental Challenges of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and ensuring reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
